Bonjour ! Merci beaucoup pour cette opportunité de pouvoir partager mon expérience avec les autres !

What was your motivation for doing a PhD thesis?
I pursued my PhD thesis in Physics and Physical Chemistry at the Institute Charles Sadron in Strasbourg. Having completed the double Master-2 program in Condensed Matter and Nanophysics between the University of Strasbourg and the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, I was excited to continue discovering the topic of my Master's internship as a doctoral student in the SYCOMMOR group led by Martin Brinkmann.
I found it very exciting to work on the research and development of Anisotropic Thermoelectric Polymer Materials and to discover their optical, structural and electronic properties. It was a multidisciplinary and experimental subject which made me discover a lot regarding research in Material Science!
In fact, during the thesis, there are many motivating things, such as discovering new experimental techniques, applying our analytical thinking to the research topic, learning to manage a project and conduct research, developing our soft skills, speaking in public, exchanging with people from different cultures, participating to scientific conferences etc.
How to choose the next step after the thesis?
As a PhD, there are always two possibilities after the thesis: either stay in academia and continue to do research as a postdoctoral researcher, or move to industry. The second possibility implies a wide range of choices. Depending on our personality and talents, we can valorize many things while working in industry, such as Research and Development (R&D) in the field close to the topic of our thesis, Project Management, Systems Engineering or switch to the field of Computer Science which also offers a large variety of jobs.
In my case, I wanted to combine science and programming in my job, and the closest choice to achieve that was Data Science. Given the high demand for data specialists and the interest in understanding how Machine Learning algorithms work, I decided to make a leap to this field.
